United has launched VoWi-Fi (Voice over Wi-Fi) for iPhone to provide better cellular voice service in lower-coverage areas and in areas where United does not have roaming partners (such as international travel destinations). Read below to learn more about VoWi-Fi from United!

Instructions to Enable VoWi-Fi on Apple iPhone 6s or newer:

iPhone 6 and older models are not eligible for VoWi-Fi. If you have an older iPhone model, please contact United today to learn more about your free phone replacement options!


  1. Make sure your phone is on the latest available iOS software version at Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings and tap on Cellular.
  3. Under the United heading, tap on Wi-Fi Calling.
  4. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
  5. Enter or update your address for emergency services.


    Note: Emergency calls on your iPhone are routed through cellular service when available. In the event that cellular service isn’t available, and you have enabled Wi-Fi Calling, emergency calls may be made over Wi-Fi, and the address you supply in the Emergency Address section may be used to aid response efforts if your location cannot be determined. Because of this, it is prudent to keep this address updated when you are not at your primary emergency address. When connected to Wi-Fi calling, your iPhone may not receive emergency alerts.

What is Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi)?

Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) is the ability for your voice services (phone calls and text messages) to run over a Wi-Fi network instead of a traditional LTE cellular network.

What are the benefits of VoWi-Fi?

VoWi-Fi allows you to make and receive calls and texts in areas of lower coverage when connected to a solid Wi-Fi connection. This allows customers to have reliable voice service in basements, shops, etc. where they do not typically have strong cellular reception but do have a solid Wi-Fi connection.

VoWi-Fi should also increase the quality of calls, allow for a quicker connection time, and improve voice experience when customers are traveling outside of United’s home network and are connected to a solid Wi-Fi connection.

What phones support VoWi-Fi?

At this time, only iPhone 6s models and later support VoWi-Fi. Please make sure your phone is updated with the latest iOS software so you can enable VoWi-Fi.

What phones DO NOT support VoWi-Fi?

Apple iPhone 6 and older models are not capable of supporting VoWi-Fi. (Please note that iPhone 6s and later models are VoWi-Fi capable.) Android smartphones and basic/feature phones are not currently eligible for United Wireless VoWi-Fi.
